About The 9th Day Animal Rescue Centre

The 9th Day is a rescue, rehabilitation & rehoming centre for abused, neglected and stray animals.

The 9th Day is a registered NPC based in Krugersdorp, Johannesburg South Africa founded by Charmaine Booysens in January 2015.

Our main focus are stray animals – the neglected, sick, broken souls. We rescue the forgotten, heal the broken and love the unloved. All our animals get vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped and sterilised. The 9th Day is pro-life, which means the only time an animal will be sent to heaven is if a veterinarian determines there is no way to save him/her.

Lake Lucy Brown’s puppies turn 12

Rescued dog Lake Lucy Brown, named after Florida Lake where she was rescued, lived a good life after she was taken in by Sarette Vos.

Lucy died on 10 April 2023, after being diagnosed with lung cancer. To commemorate her life, each year all of her puppies and their owners get together to celebrate their birthday, which includes a pet-friendly cake and personalised treats.

Lake Lucy’s pups turned 12 in January 2025 and Sarette hosted a puppy braai with their owners. This was a great way to celebrate her life and the challenges she faced while being pregnant, before being rescued.

More Than Training — It’s About True Commitment

Sarette explains how challenging it was to find a good home for the puppies.

“As a professional dog trainer, it is important for me to make sure a dog has a loving and healthy environment. It breaks my heart when dog owners don’t remain consistent with the responsibilities that come with ownership of their fur babies,” she says.

She and the owners dedicate their time to making sure all nine pups reunite regularly for dog walks. “Keeping Lucy’s memory alive reminds us of the good work we did when rescuing her,” Sarette adds. She continues doing regular check-ups to make sure the pups are vaccinated, healthy, well-trained and remain in loving homes.
